SIGHT
Most professionally designed gyms will be divided into different sections, usually proceeding from a warming up/stretching area to cardio equipment, strength equipment, functional and suspension training systems. To provide an orderly line of sight upon entering the gym, taller machines should be situated towards the back of the room.

CEILING
CEILING Ceiling height plays an important role in any design, ideally the ceiling height for a gym should be between 3.2 metres to 3.5 metre depending on the machines installed. For example, for the fly yoga systems or the suspension training systems, the ceiling should be 3.5 metres.

LIGHTING
A gym should be airy and bright with natural light wherever possible. However, glare should be avoided, especially with spot lights that shine directly onto the touch screens of cardio equipment. In dance studios and the like, lighting variations via a central system with preset programs for different levels of brightness in different areas can be ideal. For areas such as reception, dance and aerobic studios, large screen televisions or entertainment systems are also recommended.

DIGITAL SIGNAGE
An innovative and useful addition to a top quality gym is the digital signage panel which can be situated at the reception area or throughout the gym. These panels should be linked to a central system, to provide up-todate daily, weekly and monthly schedules of classes. Thus enabling members to be au fait at a glance on when to book their classes. With touch screen features, members may also check on the profiles of trainers and instructors.

MIRRORS
A significant element of design in a professionally planned gym is the placement of mirrors. For monitoring and perfecting their exercises end-users find encouragement in watching themselves actually doing their routines.
Mirrors should be of high quality with no distortion, and ideally they should not be placed opposite to each other but placed diagonally. It is suggested not to have too many mirrors and only on one wall.
All floor to ceiling mirrors should have a cushioned base for safety reasons. So mirrors should be fixed at 30cm above floor level in general areas while they should be fixed at 50cm above floor level in the free-weight areas in case any barbells or dumbbells are accidentally dropped.
