SMELL To create and enhance the overall ambience of a fresh odourless gym, ventilation systems should be set to provide and maintain more air circulations than that of general public places. Within the exercise areas, air-flow pressure should be kept at a 50/50 ratio with the outside atmosphere to bring in adequate fresh air. In wet areas such as shower rooms, the ratio should be maintained at a higher ratio of 60/40 to disperse the high humidity in the air. One solution is the installation of dehumidifiers above the shower areas to combat steam arising from the showers – this is indispensable especially during peak periods.
Another point of note is that wallpaper and carpeting are not recommended in any of the areas largely due to hygienic reasons as sweat and body odour can adhere to fibres.
One popular new method to combat odour is to install aromatic devices within the air-conditioning systems. Properly placed, they automatically dispense lightly perfumed scents throughout the gym and thus contribute to a more inviting and refreshing atmosphere.
